I took another deep breath while staring at the screen of my phone. My call to Sophie had been disconnected for the ninth time now. It had been three days since the last time I saw her. I tried contacting her but she wouldn’t respond. She hadn’t been at her bakery as well, according to Lesley. I wanted to ask her why she left without saying anything.

Had I offended her in some way? Did she not like what had happened between us?

I wanted answers, but I had no idea where or who to ask.

I sighed again. I told myself a couple of times it was okay. It was just one night, just another woman. There was nothing between us.

We were not a thing, but we could be…

I sighed again. At least Sophie had bothered to write me a note. But why do I still feel so restless? Was it my ego?

I shook my head. I’m sure it wasn’t.

Ever since I met Sophie, and had spent time with her, I knew she was the kind of woman who didn’t like men like me. Maybe it was my pride, or the fact I really had no one special in my life now, that I ended up bothering her completely peaceful life.

Fuck.

Why the hell was I thinking like this?

Helplessly, I pressed the intercom and called my secretary.

“Postpone all my meetings for the rest of the day. I have something urgent to attend to,” I told Glenda, the moment she stepped into my office.

“Of course. Anything else?” the middle-aged woman asked.

“If my family calls, tell them I’m in the middle of a meeting.”

Glenda frowned, then smiled. “Alright. Is that all?”.

I nodded in response, tapping the table with a finger.

“Uh, Glenda?” I called out, when she turned to leave my office.

“Yes, sir?”

“Have you… Um…”

The woman grinned. “You’ve looked so restless for a couple of days now. Is there something bothering you?”

I sighed, feeling defeated. Glenda had been working for me for almost three years now. She had been my father’s secretary before that for many years, and had guided me since I started working in the company. She was trustworthy. And over the years, I have come to consider her a good friend.

“It’s just that…”

Glenda came back towards me and sat on one of the chairs in front of my desk, with one eyebrow raised. She scrutinized me for a few moments, then beamed.

“A woman, maybe?” she asked.

I nodded again. “It’s just…we were supposed to be friends. I went with her to parties. I even told her I don’t want anything to jeopardize what we have. But…”

“Something happened.”

“Yeah. And she walked out on me without saying anything. Well, she did leave a note saying she would call. But she didn’t. I tried to contact her myself, but she’s always out of reach. When I went to her shop, she wasn’t there either. I don’t know what happened. I think she hates me. I never felt this way before. Help me! Why does she hate me?”

Glenda chuckled, while watching me grip the fountain pen as if it were the one who’d done me wrong.
